Smart Tag Manual - iOS

PetFindr Smart Tag Manual

Thank you for choosing the PetFindr Smart Tag - a simple, secure way to help locate your pet using Apple’s Find My network.

This tag is not a GPS tracker and does not provide live tracking. Instead, it uses Bluetooth signals and the Apple Find My network to help identify your pet’s approximate location when within range of nearby Apple devices.

When your pet is lost, nearby iPhones or Apple devices can securely detect the Smart Tag and update its last known location in your Find My app.

Please note: Because it relies on nearby Apple devices, performance may vary depending on your location and environment.

This guide will walk you through setting up and using your Smart Tag to ensure your pet always has the best chance of being found.

1. Getting Started

1.1 Power On/Off

1.1.1 Power On
Press the circular dot on the device’s power button - press and release quickly, there will be a short pause, then you will hear a chime.  When you hear the chime, it indicates that the device has been powered on.

1.1.2 Power Off

The tag will automatically power off after 10 mins.

1.2. Check for updates

To use the Apple Find My app to locate item, the latest version of version of iOS, iPadOS or macOS is recommended.  The Find My app on Apple Watch requires the latest version of watchOS.

2. Connect Your Smart Tag

2.1 Start the App

2.1.1 Open the Find My app on your supported iPhone or iPad.
2.1.2 Allow notifications from the app.

2.2 Connect Your Locator

2.2.1 Power on your Locator, select the Items tab, then tap Add Item > Other Supported Item.
2.2.2 Make sure your Locator is close to your phone. Wait until you see the pop-up “Wireless tag,” then tap Connect.
2.2.3 Choose a recognisable name and emoji, then tap Continue.
2.2.4 You’ll be asked to confirm linking the Locator to your Apple ID. Tap Continue.
2.2.5 Tap Finish — your Smart Tag is ready to go.

3. Function Introduction

3.1 Locate Your Item

When your item is nearby, tap Play Sound in the Find My app, and your Smart Tag will start beeping. If out of range, you can view the Last Known Location.

3.3 Directions

Navigate to Find My App > Directions.  This will open Maps where you can map a direct route to the location of your smart tag.

3.3 Share Items

You can share the Smart Tag with others by opening Find My > Share Items > Clicking ‘Add Person’ and then adding the person from your contacts.

Shared users can locate your item but won't receive separation alerts. Requires iOS 17, iPadOS 17, or macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

3.4 Lost Mode

When lost mode is enabled, you will get a notification when the location is next registered.  You can leave a phone number and email address for the finder to contact you, but this is a secondary safety measure - your PetFindr tag will have all these details.

Note: When Lost Mode is enabled, your Locator is locked and no-one else can pair with it.  DO NOT REMOVE THE ITEM IN THE APP, otherwise your Smart Tag will be locked and unable to re-link.

3.2 Notifications

You can receive alerts if you leave your smart tag behind.  You can switch this off in Find My App under Notifications > Notify when left behind > Turn Off.  Note: “Notify When Found” only works when your Locator is out of range.

3.5 Remove Item

To remove the Smart Tag, navigate to:  Find My App > Scroll to bottom > Click Remove Item > Remove.  This will remove all tracking of the smart tag in your Find My App.

3.6 Rename Item

Navigate to Find My App > Select ‘Rename Item’ then simply edit the name of the item and click done.

3.5 Factory Reset

Press the function button twice (you’ll hear one beep) then press the function button four times rapidly and hold on the fifth press until you hear a ring-ring chime.  This resets your Locator and allows it to be paired again.

3.6 Unwanted Tracking Detection

If a Find My-enabled smart tag is moving with someone who isn't the owner:

  • iPhone users will get an alert.
  • If no iPhone is present, the smart tag will emit a sound.
